Authorities Destroy Historical Architectural Ensemble in Hrodna
06/28/2007 - 03:41 / Aleś Čajčyc
We witness the largest act of vandalism in the history of independent Belarus. The authorities of Belarusian city Hrodna plan to demolish 40% of the city’s historical buildings that comprise its Old Town part. Hrodna is the last big city in Belarus where historical architectural ensemble was preserved.

Belarusian and Gaelic: Two Languages At Stake
02/08/2007 - 07:40 / http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,1983434,00.html#article_continue
The situation with the Belarusian language in Belarus is similar to the of Gaelic language in Ireland. After a hundred years of Polonisation in the late Polish-Litvin Commonwealth followed by two hundred years of Russification in the Russian Empire and the USSR, Belarusian is no longer spoken at home by a vast majority of Belarusians.  Speaking Belarusian in Belarus has become a sign of protest and a political issue as it is the anti-Lukashist opposition and the repressed civil society who are left as the real advocates of the national language.

Political raps in Belarus
12/28/2006 - 08:38 / http://e-ndrus.livejournal.com/2006/04/20/
Rap music is much of a mainstream in the US, Germany, Poland and many other countries. For some reason, Belarus was lagging behind, with rock being a dominant style of youth protests. There are so many fantastic outfits singing heavy songs of cherished Belarusian revolution – N.R.M., Krok, Krama, Novaje Nieba, Tavaryš Maŭzer and many others. No surprise that “Songs of Liberty,” a revolutionary compilation, was much heavier than the Ukrainian albums sold on Kiev’s Maidan.
