Economics has from its origins been concerned with how an extended order of human interaction comes into existence through a process of variation, winnowing and sifting far surpassing our vision or our capacity to design. |

The Power of Involvement 11/19/2008 - 18:31The EUforIA Youth Summit 08 (EYS’08) event organized by the European Youth for Informed Action organization gathered more than 100 active young people from all over Europe on October 17-19 in Geneva. I, a Belarusian student of Laurea University of Applied Sciences (Helsinki), decided to be part of it. And I will explain why this has been a good idea. comments: 0

The Launching of a Patriotic Movement in Belarus 07/11/2007 - 04:23 / David Marples On July 3, Belarus officially commemorated Independence Day, and the month also marks the 17th anniversary of the declaration of sovereignty in the late Soviet era. In contrast to previous years, the authorities are now offering a new form of patriotism: the promotion of national culture and pride is being combined with a new movement for support of the Lukashenka government and celebrating what is described as the economic success of the past decade and the flourishing of the current state. The creation of a new public association called "Belaya Rus'," a pro-government organization formed in several centers simultaneously, could prove decisive in forthcoming elections to the Belarusian Parliament or municipal elections. comments: 0

Time to Win! Manifesto 05/25/2007 - 03:16 / http://www.peremen.info/We, the representatives of a new political generation of Belarusians, who--eager to act resolutely to defend Belarus’ sovereignty, its process of democratization, and economic sufficiency and independence--call upon all members of civic groups and communities, and all Belarusians interested in changes, to unite upon the following principles:
We call for the truthful unification of opposition forces’ efforts, not for the “consolidation” of party leaders’ ambitions and interests as is presently, but for the sake of victory over Lukashenka’s regime under which Belarus is doomed to remain unsound both politically and economically under present conditions. comments: 0

To the New Opposition 01/16/2007 - 21:47 / http://belintellectuals.com/discussions/?id=120 Many commentators of March events in Belarus started talking about The Event, which at last happened in Belarus. In other words they started talking about the end of the era of “bonelessly tolerant locals” (pamiarkounasci tutejsych), about emergence of Politics and Public Area in the country, about the birth of modern Nation. I agree with that. I think March 19-25 started a new count in the history of the country. Something like September 11, only with a different label and contents. The events that happened don’t fit in ordinary political and theoretic schemes, which are still utilized by our analysts and politicians. The Event must, at last, give a start to rethinking our social being, something that I had to say more than once, analyzing Belarusian situation. comments: 2

Results-2006 01/13/2007 - 21:44 / Olga Szparha Distinctive quality of 2006 is its beginning in March. It began on March 19 to be more exactly. No matter how much effort am I trying to put to recall what was before, in Febuary and January, I can’t remember anything. In January and Febuary there was an anticipation of March; there were questions about how the presidential elections would go, and what they would mean for Belarusian society, and for me personally; a question whether Belarusian society along with me would handle a challenge, which most likely be thrown by March 2006. comments: 0

2007. Mobilization 01/10/2007 - 05:25 / Hieorhi PłaščynskiPast year of 2006 was undoubtedly a year great changes. Perhaps those are not changes whose effects are seen right away. Those are the changes that cultivate future victories. Primarily I would like to make an emphasis on two events:
- a tent town
- the rise of new generation of civic and youth activists
A tent camp was a very sincere sight, and not from the perspective of how many people were there, or how it was covered by media, but more because of the atmosphere that was dominating the souls of citizens who came to the Square. They found out themselves that a step towards the future can be done individually, not waiting for any special circumstances.
The fist event defined the emergence of the second. The “Plaza Generation” believed in its strength. Granted that far from everybody who went there are now active. comments: 0

The history and current state of civic education in Belarus 12/27/2006 - 21:13 / S.A. MatskevichThe latest period of the history of civic education in Belarus is already over 10 years old. In fact, 2006 was a year for reviewing and assessing the results of the activity conducted by our educators and all those involved in the process, as the results of civic education become clear in a real, active situation, when citizens can be expected to show their civic qualities. Also being assessed are the results of the reflection and thinking of those formulating and implementing the aims of civic enlightenment. These reflecting subjects might be politicians, political analysts, leaders of governmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as the teachers and educators themselves. Thinking cannot permit any self-deception and lies. comments: 1
