Freeing Theater in Belarus

When Belarussian police crashed the latest premiere at the Free Theater three weeks ago, company founder Nikolai Khalezin didn't, at first, consider the raid out of the ordinary; the police had disrupted the company's performances before. This time, though, 50 people present, including the actors and audience members, were taken into custody. "Police used to burst into our performances with machine guns but they disappeared just as fast, "Khalezin told Ingo Petz of Germany's Suddeutche Zeitung. "A mass arrest like this is a first."

To Be or Not to Be...

In the last few months there were lots of disputes among Lukashenka’s opponents on whether we need independent radio and television or not. To be exact, the issue is slightly different: will one new independent radio station or TV channel be enough to change people’s mentality and hence the situation in the country?

Humor, the last reality of optimism

In our days certain actions of the Belarusian government don’t evoke any emotions among the majority of our country’s inhabitants. Except for a smile, maybe. For example, the loss of the first space-satellite of our native land “Belka” (Belarusian space apparatus), caused a flow of jokes dedicated to Belka and Strelka, the first living creatures, two canines, to come back well from the depth of cosmos to sinful Earth. Why do we like throwing jokes about our leadership today? Also, have we always made fun of them?
