Opposition Coalition Adopts Message to Voters for Forthcoming Parliamentary Elections
05/18/2008 - 19:36 / Naviny.byThe Political Council of the United Pro-Democratic Forces on May 16 adopted the text of a message to the voters that the coalition’s candidates in this fall’s elections for the House of Representatives would use in their campaigns.
“The cornerstone of the message is that the government should be under the public’s control,” Anatol Lyabedzka, chairman of the United Civic Party who is one of the leaders of the coalition, told BelaPAN. “This is the main idea that pervades all our campaign material,” he added.
Mr. Lyabedzka noted that the text had been written for several months, and that there had been several versions of the message, but the coalition ultimately chose the one highlighting the idea of public control over the government.
“At present the Belarusian government is beyond parliamentary and public control,” Mr. Lyabedzka said. “This is the cause of our present problems in the economy, the social sphere and the international arena. The uncontrolled rule brings about only problems for the Belarusians.”
According to him, the message specifies the methods and ways of establishing public control over the government and elaborates on other important subjects.
