Statement by Belarus MFA Press Secretary in Relation to the Developments along the Polish Zone of the EU Border
01/28/2008 - 15:06 / Belarus Ministry of Foreign AffairsThe Republic of Belarus is seriously concerned at the unacceptable developments unfolding along the Polish border of the European Union.
In fact, this zone of the EU border has now brought carriage of people and cargos to a total standstill.
With special alarm, we perceive communications of the physical and moral sufferings inflicted on people who have been staying in the many kilometers’ queues in the Polish side, unavailability of the medical facilities included.
The Belarusian side hopes that the European Union will duly and without delay deliver on its international commitments in relation to free movement of people and cargos at the EU external borders and will prevent further damage to the people and economy of other countries.
In imperative terms, we urge the European Union to use all necessary efforts to settle the problems the soonest possible in the Polish zone of its border, including by use of the representatives of other European customs authorities.
The Republic of Belarus also suggests that the EU should create an efficient system of co-operation as soon as possible with the customs authorities of Belarus and other neighbouring countries to prevent such situations in future.
