Belarus Calls All Compatriots Back to Native Land
01/31/2007 - 19:46 / KommersantBelarus’ government is elaborating a bill on compatriots living abroad, Vice Premier Alexander Kosinets said as quoted by the BELTA news agency. The purpose of the bill is optimizing migration in Belarus, mostly in part of creating conditions to encourage ethnic Belarussians to go back to the native land.
Nowadays, over 3 million ethnic Belarussians are residents of other states. “We will hail the return of compatriots to the motherland,” Kosinets said, emphasizing the very high surplus of migration. “The indicator was above 5,000 in 2006,” the vice prime minister specified.
A similar program exists in Russia. It was shaped for 2006 to 2012 with each region of the country presenting its own program of repatriation elaborated in view of the local specifics and labor demand. The aim of the effort is to urge Russians to return to the home country.
