Shaking Hands With Lukashenka
02/14/2007 - 19:39 / Nasha Niva
The open letter of Aliaksandr Milinkevich’s to Lukashenka has become a major controversy, troubling the minds of those, who belong to the opposition wing of the Belarusian political scene. On 7 February the leader of the united Belarusian opposition (the question whether Milinkevich is still its leader and whether the opposition still united is another widely discussed issue) sent a letter to Lukashenka, which was also published and quoted by the independent Belarusian media. “It is difficult for me to turn to you, but I understand, that I have no right not to use all the chances for the future of our Belarus”, begins the letter. Milinkevich outlines the basic common goals of the president and the opposition – preventing the economic collapse, maintaining cooperation with the East and with the West, and preserving the independence of the country.

How "United" is the United Opposition in Belarus?
12/20/2006 - 21:03 / The JAMESTOWN FOUNDATION
The united opposition campaign during the 2006 Belarusian presidential election was a creditable effort, particularly in the weeks leading up to the vote as well during the protests afterward in October Square. Though hundreds were arrested, and the crackdown by the authorities is continuing, there was a genuine sentiment of new unity. As a result, the youth group Zubr announced its self-dissolution in order to combine its efforts with others in the movement "For Freedom!" (Narodnaya volya, May 12).

Powerlessness of Our Words, but We Still Have Pretensions
12/19/2006 - 23:50 / afn.by
Sentences consist of words, words of letters, and letters of sounds. This is the condition of many Belarusian oppositional leaders today. Their words don’t mean anything any more, as they have become a single mournful buzz. Another terrible event happened in Belarus on November 1, 2006: an innocent person was jailed for his political activities. Referring to the words of the Head of KGB S. Sukharenka, some would say that Zmicier Dashkevich deserves it, as he is the leader of youth organization that intended to cause disorder in March 2006 in Belarusian capital Minsk during the presidential elections.
