Lithuania Exploring "Exit Strategy" for Belarus Leader

EU state Lithuania and EU neighbour Georgia are working on an exit strategy for Europe's "last dictator" - Belarus president Aleksander Lukashenko - amid concern that Russian gas and oil hikes against Belarus are part of a wider process threatening the country's independence.

Why Navumau Goes to US?

Belarusian Interior Minister Uladzimir Navumau (Naumov) is to visit the US. It is still unknown why the minister who had been denied entry to many countries as a suspect in abductions and assassinations of opposition leaders and a journalist, visits the US. The Interior Ministry press service does not comment on that fact. The “Ezhednevnik” has asked experts about possible reason of Navumau’s visit to the US.

Belarusian regime ready go into debt

Today Economy Ministry of Belarus has stated that it thinks about possible attracting untied credits for $1.2 billion from China. Earlier Belarusian government asked Russia to give $1.5 billion stabilization credit to Belarus. “No we can judge the quality of Belarusian government’s work. It is not going to deal with the reasons of crisis in the economy of Belarus; it is just trying to patch holes with the help of the easiest way, considering the short term perspective, to run into debt. Thus the government is destroying one of the few positive results of its policy, a very low foreign debt,” told a well-known Belarusian economist Yaraslau Ramanchuk to the Charter’97 press-center, commenting on the recent initiatives of the government.

Youth activist Dzyanys Dzyanysau’s location is still unknown

16 February the militia detained opposition activist Dzyanys Dzyanysau at the Gomel railway station and guarded him to an isolation ward .It is unknown whether any charge has been laid to him. According to his mother Raisa Dzyanysava, she was confirmed by phone that her son had been guarded to Vitsebsk. , but the Vitebsk isolation ward’s guard denies Dzyanysau’s presence there. The mother with a parcel to Dzyanys has been meeting all night trains from Gomel but her son was not brought, Radio Svaboda reports.

Uladzimir Navumau Goes to New York to UN Conference

Belarusian Foreign Minister Uladzimir Navumau is to stay in New York from 4 to 7 March. He is to take part in an international conference on Trafficking in Women and Girls. It has been stated in a resolution of the Council of Ministers by which Uladzimir Navumau was delegated to New York. The resolution has been signed by Belarusian Prime Minister Syarhei Sidorski. The Charter’97 press-center has managed to find out what kind of conference it is.

But Lukashenka's main opposition challenger, Alyaksandr Milinkevich, says the congress will be nothing more than "internal squabbling" over leadership -- and that he doesn't intend to go.
