Belarusian-Russian Trade Reported up 26.5 Percent in First 11 Months of 2006

Trade between Belarus and Russia increased by 26.5 percent year-on-year to $18 billion in the first 11 months of 2006, according to the press office of the Belarusian economy ministry.

Statement by the European Union on the Belarus Helsinki Committee

The European Union has learnt with deep regret that the Belarus Helsinki Committee has been ordered by the Presidential Administration’s property management department to vacate its office in Minsk by the end of this week. The Presidential Administration’s department notified the termination of the rental agreement and refused to let other vacant rooms to the Committee. This follows the seizure on 5 December 2006 by Belarusian court authorities of equipment owned by the Belarus Helsinki Committee. The Committee is facing not only eviction from its premises but also the loss of its legal address which could lead to the closure of this, the last remaining human rights NGO registered in Belarus.

Addressing a Minsk academic forum on January 26, President Alexander Lukashenka in fact had the European Union in mind for much of his speech, clearly signaling a turnabout from his hitherto exclusive Russian orientation. Lukashenka also made the same points in accompanying remarks to the German daily Die Welt.

Pavel Legkiy, who is the briefer of Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko, has refuted all reports saying that Lukashenko allegedly annulled crude transit agreements with Russia, Interfax reported.
